AdaptH2 system
For ultra-lean H2 combustion enabling high performance H2 ICEs with zero emissions (CH4 suitable).
Gain back the 20-30% of performance loss
Injectors and ignition systems are critical components for hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2 ICE), which are seen as a viable alternative to fuel cells for mid to heavy-duty applications due to their robustness and power delivery. HOERBIGER and Altronic (a member of the HOERBIGER Group), in cooperation with Prometheus Applied Technologies, provider of hydrogen combustion system know-how, are now advancing development of a solution for hydrogen ignition with prototypes already being available!
Currently, the performance of H2 ICEs faced difficulties resulting in 20 to 30% loss in power density and efficiency due to combustion instabilities. To overcome these difficulties and to achieve power and efficiency parity with diesel engines the AdaptH2 consists of 3 major components:
- Injectors with an adaptable nozzle design for a homogeneous injection of H2
- A predictive same cycle spark ignition control for proper ignition and prevention of hot spots
- A unique prechamber design for fast combustion of ultra-lean flames
To assure homogeneity of the H2-air mixture, a flexile jet dynamics injector, tailored to the specific intake port design, combined with an intake turbulance inducer and a port deflector are used to define the flow characteristics needed to enhance the H2 in-cylinder mixing.
The "Predictive Model-Based Spark Control" patented technology, enables to adjust the ignition energy within microseconds from the initiation of the spark to ensure stable combustion throughout the range of speed, load and transient operations.
Moreover, patented prechamber technologies, like the Compound Toroidal Vortex and the Active Scavange, are used to minimize the thermodynamic losses from ultra-lean H2 flames and, hence, assure fast and stable combustion under all operating conditions.
